Under Shri Jha’s stewardship MCL’s performance took a quantum upward leap and MCL presently accounts for 25% of CIL’s overall production and around 24% of total coal supplies.

Shri. Jha, began his career in coal mining industry, in 1983, in Central Coalfields Limited. He had held many important assignments and senior positions in CCL including that as General Manager, Argada Area. Shri Jha had a 14-year stint in Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI) - the Ranchi based consultancy arm of CIL - planning opencast and underground mines.

Shri. Jha has over three decades of experience under his belt in mine planning, production, management supervision, direction and control of underground as well as open cast coal mines.

For a while he worked as Director (P&P) in MOIL Limited where he was the Nominated Owner and Head of Production, Planning, Projects, Quality Control and Mine Safety Divisions and other allied departments including Personnel and Industrial Relations.

Soon after he took over as Chairman of the world’s largest coal producing company Shri Jha, set increasing coal supplies to power plants to the mandated stock level as a top priority to avoid any shortage concerns. Shri Jha says higher coal output with increased supplies and improved quality will be pursued in all the seriousness that it deserves with diligence. The company’s aim is to make the country self-reliant in coal and reduce import dependency to the extent possible.

With him at the helm, Coal India during 2018-19 has consistently registered growth in coal production, coal supplies, supplies to power sector and rake loading apart from a wide array of developments.

  1. Shri. Jha played a key role in fast tracking the process of the implementation of a robust, proven, state-of-the-art Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in CIL and its subsidiaries aimed to integrate all aspects of business operations into a single easy to use system and effectively plan, manage and optimize all the organizational resources through standardization of business processes and best practices.

  2. Coal India is tasked to become a Net Zero energy company by Ministry of Coal, a move which entails the company to generate 3,000 MW of solar power. Shri. 3. Under Shri. Jha Coal India has aligned itself as corporate partner of International Solar Alliance (ISA), a United Nation’s Body. This significant step entails CIL to take advantage of technical know-how in renewable energy field using ISA’s digital platform while implementing its solar power projects.

  4. Realizing the importance of on time procurement of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery that would expressively help in improving open cast coal production, Shri. Jha set the course, at faster pace, for the process of procuring various types and sizes of high capacity HEMM in a transparent e-procurement mode with reverse auction.

Shri Anil Kumar Jha is the recipient of ‘Best Chief Executive’ Award conferred by GeoMine Tech for outstanding performance of MCL during 2017-18. He has presented many technical papers in national and international seminars and workshops. He is presently the President of MGMI a 113-year old Institute dedicated to promoting the scientific study of mining and mineral industries of the country.

A modest and soft spoken person by nature Shri Jha is quick to admit that nothing can be achieved in isolation and it is team work that makes great achievements. He feels quality is not confined only to product dispensation but also extends to all spheres of operations that defines the company’s future.
