CIL is a Maharatna company - a privileged status conferred by Government of India to select state owned enterprises in order to empower them to expand their operations and emerge as global giants. The select club has only ten members out of more than three hundred Central Public Sector Enterprises in the country.

Safety and Rescue Division of Coal India is apex body for ensuring safe practices and observance of prevalent Rules & Regulations so as to promote safe working atmosphere in its mines. For this purpose, Internal Safety Organisation (ISO) at subsidiary level manages the safety related issues.

Coal India has always given highest priority towards "Safety”. Safety is the part of its core process as is embodied in its "Mission”. CIL has a well-defined Safety Policy and a multi-disciplinary Internal Safety Organisation in its all Subsidiaries to monitor its implementation. The Safety performance improved significantly over the years with:

  1. Collective commitment and synergetic collaboration of Management, Employees, the Regulator (DGMS) and Trade Unions.
  2. Use of State-of-the-art technology in the field of Mining Methods, Mining Machinery and Safety Monitoring Mechanism.
  3. Continuous improvement in knowledge, skill and responsiveness of work force through excellent safety training and persistent safety drives.
  4. Constant vigil and round-the-clock supervision through various agency.
